FILMMAKER ☆ LEADER ☆ PHILANTHROPIST

South Philadelphia-born and raised, Kyra Fernandez is a multimedia artist who seamlessly blends social change and filmmaking, transforming these mediums into lasting memories that build a foundation of legacy.
Currently a junior at Spelman College majoring in documentary filmmaking with a minor in interactive media, Kyra continues to expand her craft as a documentarian, producer, creative director, director of photography, and aspiring AR/VR filmmaker. Recognized for her impact and creativity, she received the Outstanding TV Broadcasting Scholar Award, Zynga Gaming Scholar Award, and earned Second Place in the Spelprenur competition, along with Viewers’ Choice Award from Spelman College.
The love and support of her parents serve as the driving force behind her creative journey. Between the ages of 12 and 21, she endured the profound loss of both parents—a time marked by grief but also by the enduring power of remembrance. From her parents cheering her on at soccer games, applauding ballet recitals, to rooting for her as a news anchor at her Performing Arts High School, the present moments they once shared remains deeply connected to her purpose.
Today, Kyra serves as a vessel for her parents and others whose voices deserve to be heard. Through her films, she blends poetic and cinéma vérité styles to illuminate the personal journeys of individuals and visionaries. She embraces the concept of sonder—the realization that every individual carries a rich, complex story. Her work embodies resilience, passion, and diverse perspectives, inspiring viewers to connect with the narratives, cultures, and dreams of others and oneself. Through her lens, she transforms fleeting moments into lasting narratives, ensuring no story goes untold
Community engagement and social change are at the heart of Kyra's artistic journey. She actively participates in organizations such as Lil’ Filmmakers Inc., where she produced the short film Our Environment and Us, raising awareness about the impact of environmental disparities on mental health in Philadelphia. This experience fueled her passion to mentor the youth through more organizations such as the Boys & Girls Club.
Through two years of mentorship with Disney On the Yard, Kyra has gained invaluable insight into the business of filmmaking and the creative industry. This guidance has equipped her with the knowledge and confidence to navigate the industry's complexities with vision and purpose.
